Camping in Jaisalmer

History of camping

The father of recreational camping in the UK was Thomas Hiram Holding, a British travelling tailor. He experienced camping out in the wild from his youth, when he had spent much time with his parents traveling across the American prairies. Later he embarked on a cycling and camping tour with some friends across Ireland. His book on his Ireland experience, Cycle and Camp in Connemara led to the formation of the first camping group in 1901, the Association of Cycle Campers, later to become the Camping and Caravanning Club. He wrote The Campers Handbook in 1908, so that he could share his enthusiasm for the great outdoors with the world.

Possibly the first camping ground in the world was Cunningham’s camp, near Douglas, Isle of Man, which opened in 1894. In 1906 the Association of Cycle Campers opened its first own camping site, in Weybridge. By that time the organization had several hundred members. In 1910 the Association was merged into the National Camping Club. Although WW1 was responsible for a certain hiatus in camping activity, the association received a new lease of life after the war when Sir Robert Baden-Powell (founder of the Boy Scouts movement) became its' president.

The International Federation of Camping Clubs (Federation Internationale de Camping et de Caravanning) was founded in 1932 with national clubs from all over the world affiliating with it. By the 1960 camping had become an established family holiday standard and today camp sites are ubiquitous across Europe and North America.

Camping at Jaisalmer

After the visit of Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi in the year of 1976 and subsequent declaration of “Heritage city” by her, the tourism of Jaisalmer grew at a vertical point. Backpackers used to camp at the various part of the district within the range of 40kms, around the city. Many safari lovers, used to operate safaries from Bikaner to Jaisalmer, Some times upto Bhuj.( GUJRAT) The style and form of the camping have changed in 3 decades in the city. The desolate and bleak outlook of desert has become green and populated. The real campers are vanishing and new stylish, young , contemporary, campers do not stay more than a night. The concept is totally futuristic and sumptuous. Now, Sam has become the hub of the camps. One can reach there by surface as it leads to a good motorable road. Reach the camp before the sunset, then By camel to the dunes to watch the glowing sunset. Back to the camp by camel. A tented camp at the heart of the desert reminds the “ camping era” of the erstwhile mughal emperor. Live dances, touching hospitality in rustic style yet, modern. A visit to Jaisalmer is incomplete without an overnight camping at desert. We have developed a camp at a bleak location.

The camping package is inclusive of - Traditional welcome followed by welcome drink( A glass of Indian red wine or assorted aerated drinks) camel riding on twin sharing basis, Dinner under the starry sky or in a tented dining hall, live performance to lit the evening, bar-be-que E Drinks during the dinner ( Indian sprits) Fabricated futuristic tents, ensuite tiled bathroom for night stay. On the following day campers breakfast and depart for the next destination.
